Hey all! Wanted to drop in and do a quick post about a song that I have been, quite literally, playing since I got up this morning. It’s from one of my all-time favorite musicals: Funny Girl. It’s called “The Music That Makes Me Dance” by the brilliant Jule Styne. It’s a bit sappy, but Valentine’s Day is just around the corner so we’ll call this “holiday spirit.”
I guess I am drawn to this song because it is such an unconventional love song. In a way, it’s less about what the singer would do for her lover, or what she might sacrifice for him, but more about the effect he has on her and I think that is refreshing. We always encounter the overstated claims of “finally understanding the love songs,” but this puts it into practice. She’s not claiming that he is the center of her universe, as so many artists do, but rather, she claims he is an integral addition that enhances her life. Additionally, he is the only one that can make her feel in such a manner. That’s just really beautiful to me.
Anywho, check it out if you’d like. If nothing else, it’s some grade-A singing and hauntingly beautiful music.
